How to apply for Metrobank's Prepaid Mastercard - UPDATED Sept 15, 2015

I will share my personal experience in getting this card since most reviews that I found on the internet is outdated. This review is for the Dona Soledad, Better Living Paranaque branch only. I have no idea if it will be the same as the other branches.

How to apply for  Metrobank's Prepaid Mastercard??? First thing is to disregard the things they tell you on their official website because only 1 is applicable (in my situation). Below is a quote from the supposed application requirements.

BTW, with my experience today I believe Metrobank would pass as a Government agency. To be honest LTO Paranaque is much more impressive.

Get Started
Get the Metrobank Prepaid Card and shop with the convenience of a MasterCard:
  • Visit any Metrobank branch and bring the following:
    • One (1) valid ID
    • Accomplished application form
    • P100 Welcome Kit fee (Standard Prepaid Card)
  • Load funds on your card
  • Start shopping!

Get the Special Edition Prepaid Cards for only P200 each!

And now, here is the real thing!

Take note only no.1 is correct... almost. Visit any Metrobank branch. What if the branch you visited is being renovated and is offline! Just like the Dona Soledad branch. Wanna read more? Continue below...

Important reminder.

Don't ever accomplish the application form on their website, it's just a waste of time, ink and paper because they had me fill up the exact, yes exact same form when I got there. It's almost 2016 Metrobank! Have you guys at Metrobank ever heard of paper-less transactions? At least minimize wasting paper for a start.

This is how you "actually" apply for  Metrobank's Prepaid Mastercard.

The list of documents that were asked from me initially.

1. 2 Valid ID's ( I presented my SSS card and my drivers' license )
2. Photocopy of your valid ID's including the receipt of the drivers' license.
3. Proof of billing must be under your name or should have the same address as your driver's license. If not, then you're in for a surprise! (My proof of billing is under the name of my in-laws and my driver's license address is different from my current)
4. TIN number. (I think TIN numbers are on the driver's license receipt, just across your name, I'm not 100% sure because the bank personnel just smiled at me and said "oh here it is!" while looking at my papers)

Additional requirements if proof of billing address is different from your driver's license address.

1. Barangay clearance. (Proof of residence)
    a. 2 pcs 1x1 picture. (You don't need to be smiling in this picture, smile at your own risk)
    b. Clearance form signed by the president of your homeowners' association. If you don't belong in any subdivision or village association, any barangay kagawad signature would suffice according to the officer in our barangay.

On the good side, I was able to accomplish all of these from 9am till 12noon, Barangay hall is just near Metrobank (clap clap), I happen to have spare 2 1x1 picture, photocopy machine is just across the street and for the love of god.... our homeowners association president did not go to work for some miraculous reason!

I did get my card and deposited 400 pesos today but I still need to call them after 3 days to ask if it's been activated.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:
1. Cheaper than BPI's prepaid fee P500.00 for 18 months. Unionbank's EON P350.00/year. Metrobank prepaid card is just P100.00 valid for 3 years.
2. You get the card on the same day.

Cons:
1. Feels like a government agency asking for too many requirements not listed on their website.
2. 25.00 pesos every top-up (deposit). My Unionbank EON has no charge for deposits.
3. Always offline due to a renovation of the branch, they say.

For now, this will be my advice if you want to have this prepaid card. Feel free to put your comments below if you have any questions or suggestions.

The card that I got today. 9/15/2015

RE: ONLINE PURCHASE

There is no doubt that this card would work for local establishments accepting mastercards (already tried it), but I'm curious about its capability regarding online purchases. I've read in a few blogs that they could not use this to verify their Paypal or make online purchases, some also say they are charged double so I tried it myself!

I tried it first with Google Play store, attached it to my google wallet with no problem. Tried to purchase a P200.00 peso game but failed. I checked my balance online and I was charged P120.00 pesos when I attached it to my google wallet, that is why my it failed during checkout. Waited about a minute and refreshed the page and viola! The money was returned and my balance is back at P200.00. Tried to purchase the game again and this time it's successful. Yey!

I also tried to attach it to my Paypal and no problem there either but my account was already verified using my Unionbank EON Visa card so I'm not exactly sure if this card would be able to verify. If you have any questions, feedback or personal experience about this, feel free to post in the comment below.

  8. I have one from Metrobank Dangwa- Laon-laan. Applying there was so easy. When it expired this year, I wanted then to apply near my residence, Metrobank Araneta-Quezon Ave. The new account officer there is so bruha, saan mo gagamit?, taga rito ka ba? 2 valid ID's, barangay certificate, proof of billing. Sabi ko sa sarili ko, magbi- BDO cash card na lang ako. Sa BDO they make me feel important. So, ok, wag na lang.

The limit is set by the bank under the anti money laundering law which i think is around 100k per month
