Upgrading Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10 for free in 2019

With the recent announcement of Microsoft regarding the price for extended support of Windows 7, it seems like Microsoft is making it difficult for old versions of Windows to get support, forcing them to switch to Windows 10.

So you think you missed out on the free windows 10 upgrade a while back? With the current Windows 10 Pro is around $100+ in retail, how you'd wish that you can still upgrade for free yeah? Well, the good news is it's still possible to upgrade for free as long as you have a genuine, legit and activated copy of Windows 7 or 8.

How?

If you have a Dell or HP computer most probably you have an OEM copy of Windows, all you have to do is make sure that it's properly activated. Check it in Computer then right-click Properties. While you're there, take note of the flavor of Windows you have plus the architecture, 32 or 64 bit. Mine is Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

Now let's upgrade it to windows 10 for FREE!

1. Download a copy of a Windows 10 ISO WITHOUT using Media Creation Tool. There are 2 ways to download the ISO.

Instructions if you want to download directly from Microsoft:
  • Open Microsoft EDGE browser  and go to this website: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10
  • Press F12 to go to Developer Tools and then Emulation
  • Change the User Agent String to Apple Safari (iPad) This is to trick the website into detecting that you're using an iPad.
  • Wait for the website to reload. It should show something like this:
  • Choose the correct type of windows you have and download.
2.  After downloading, open the ISO file and run setup. If you can't open the ISO file then you need to mount it first. Use an ISO mounting software like PowerISO

Once mounted, just run the setup file and do an in-place upgrade of Windows 10. If you want a fresh copy then choose "keep nothing" during the installation. Make sure you remove any CD's or USB's from the PC as it will reboot several times.

Enjoy Windows 10!

Working as of February 15, 2019.
